The Signal Point Experience Centre was opened as a river interpretive centre in 1988 by King Charles III (then Prince Charles) as a Bicentennial Commemorative Project.
In 2023, Alexandrina Council began work on a multi-million-dollar upgrade of the Goolwa Wharf Precinct including internal and external renovations to the Signal Point building.
The Goolwa Wharf Precinct project received funding support from the Australian Government and the Government of South Australia.
The renamed Signal Point Experience Centre opened its doors again in 2024 and is now a place to share the history and significance of this Murray River location.
It is also an ideal launch pad into the surrounding experiences on offer in the greater Alexandrina region.
The refurbished building works will include display systems, joinery and the latest technology (screens, iPads, and headsets) to provide the physical environment to support future employment creation in the region, and in particular providing opportunities for local Ngarrindjeri-led businesses to be created.
The permanent ‘Yuntulun Ku:li-war’ exhibition tells the stories of the Ngarrindjeri First Nations people of Country, the early settlement history of Goolwa as a major river port and the ecology of the Murray Darling River system.
This exhibition was funded by the Australian Government and created in collaboration with the Alexandrina community including Ngarrindjeri representatives.
The Signal Point Experience Centre is a key and recognisable feature of the Precinct and will continue to serve as a landmark to bring community together and share the old and new stories of this region.
